Michael Martyn

"lesser", the first release from Vancouver musician Michael Martyn, is a collection of eight songs written over his years travelling on three continents and across Canada. The title is commentary both on the consumer society and on his minimalist approach to music recording and production. Michael co-produced and played all tracks on the c.d.

Born in Peterborough, Ontario, these songs are especially reflective of Michael's transition from wandering minstrel to settled songwright. Michael's songs chart a path between the Delta blues and Celtic traditions. They are universal songs "that are equal part travelogue, journal, social commentary and philosophy. He sings those tunes with genuine conviction, deftly accompanying himself on guitar (and occasionally harmonica)."

"I've always believed in the importance of the image in communication, especially with regards to writing and poetry", Michael states. At a time when Canadian Literature was starting to be viewed with new pride, "there was this conviction in my family that the writer was an integral part of Canada, and that the imagery of this country is rich and powerful."

Michael is now a seasoned live performer who has played for thousands of people, everywhere from hockey arenas to underground punk bars, for heads of state and in remote villages in Canada and South America. His current plans include a two-year backpacking trip through Australia and Asia with his wife Glorilyn.
