The Rye Catchers
Paul Gibbons, Mark Christopher, Dan Newton and Steve (Tuna) Antunovic form the quartet known as the Rye Catchers, although half the band have been future Rye Catchers all their lives. Dan and Paul are cousins who were both drawn to music at an early age.
The range of the Rye Catchers’ music, however, cite musical influences like the Who, Radiohead, Oasis, Pink Floyd, Supergrass, Dodgy and fellow Canadians Sloan and the Flashing Lights (the Rye Catchers perform great cover tunes of almost all of the above mentioned bands). Mark also cites Willie Nelson and the soundtracks to The Godfather and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly as influences.
Over the last few years the Rye Catchers have been seen and heard at local festivals, 2000's MusicWest conference, pubs and clubs like Marpole’s, the Purple Onion, the Railway Club, the Vancouver Press Club and a one night benefit at the Vogue Theatre.
One of their recordings, Alyson Rose, has been played on C-Fox’s F-Spot, and they have also appeared on VTV’s morning program, Vancouver Breakfast. Last year they had the honour of performing at the legendary Borderline Club in Soho, London where many of their heroes (Oasis, Dodgey, The Real People) performed before them. Dan states that a Ryecatchers’ show is unique because as a band they are more concerned with melodies and vocals than whether we have more testosterone than the last band. Their live show is also energetic, enhanced by the comfortable rapport between Dan and Paul - what Paul refers to "certain witty English antics about ourselves that we acquired from knowing each other since birth".
Although down to earth, friendly chaps who happily meet with fans after all their shows, even the Ryecatchers have half their sights on the cult of celebrity. With the Rye Catchers however, the music always comes first.
