Helms Deep
 Helms Deep is a hard rock band based out of Vancouver B.C. Canada. The band was formed in the fall of 1997 when front man Glen Dobson and lead guitarist Martin Saunders put their plan into action. Glen, nicknamed Dobber, moved to Vancouver in '93 to find a music scene worth giving his life to. Little did he know that Martin Saunders had also moved to Vancouver with the same plan in mind. In a twist of fate they ended up in the same apartment building. The sound of a Les Paul screaming through a Marshal Amp invited Glen to knock on the door of Martin's abode. The two hit it off instantly with the same obvious passion for driving rock. A walk down to the local beach to jam on acoustics, they realized what they were going to do about it...start a rock band. Martin and Dobber spent a couple of years tuning their trade and setting a direction until Dobber met a bass player by the name of Dave Law.
Now with three songs written, all they needed was a drummer and a second guitar player to free up Dobber to sing. Dan Dobson, Dobber's older brother, agreed to fill the roll of rhythm guitar. With studio rehearsal time already booked they just needed a drummer to keep a beat so they could try their songs as a band. After talking to a friend of a friend, enters Ryan Martel. Not knowing what to expect the four were pleasantly surprised when this somewhat cocky drummer came in and began to pound away with a double kick. His love for music and the instant chemistry between the five solidified the band and Helms Deep was born.
In June of the following summer the band had picked up momentum. Now with a full set worth of music, their own rehearsal space, a fan base starting to build and gigs coming to them, Dan realized the band was conflicting with his personal and professional life. When both Davie and Ryan also decided to pursue other interests, the band took a short break to create and re-group. Dobber kept writing lyrics and Martin continued writing music while looking for the right musicians to complete Helms Deep.
Helms Deep (Martin & Dobber) auditioned several other musicians. At this point they would like to thank Mark Organ, Grant McCoy, Terrence Miller and Bill Bidovik for their time and effort in the band.
When after a few months Helms Deep was asked to play at a party, Martin and Dobber approached Ryan about playing the drums. Ryan readily agreed and after one song, realized that this was where he wanted to be. He came back stronger than ever and the three were ready to search for a bass player to complete the Helms Deep package.
In walks Rene answering their ad in the Georgia Strait. Rene was just what the band needed having the creativity and dedication to help make Helms Deep stronger than ever. The four band members began the task of re-building Helms Deep.
The band was once again ready to tackle the road of rock'n'roll all they needed was their first gig. Studabaker's Cabaret seemed to be the place for this and well, it's only the beginning...
