The Be Good Tanyas
The Be Good Tanyas holed up for the last part of the summer in an old wooden shack on the outskirts of Vancouver to record their debut album, "Blue Horse" with producer, Futcher (of Hellenkeller). No running water, no windows and no distractions.
This is an album in the true sense, with slow sombre ballads and uplifting sing-a-longs side by side. The sounds and the songs are both haunting and soothing. The instrumentation is made up of the organic instruments usually found in bluegrass and country and rock: mandolin, banjo, fiddle, acoustic and electric guitar, drums and upright bass. Riding overtop of this delicate and intricate sound are the most powerful vocal performances since Ricky Lee Jones, Tracey Chapman and Joni Mitchell.
Some of the tracks on Blue Horse were recorded live off the floor to capture the interaction of the players in the room. Rumour has it that 44 bottles of Gato Negro, 20 cases of Rainforest Ale and large amounts of B.C.'s finest export was martyred during this recording.
